Cellulite has long been a problem that women have sought to solve. The “cottage cheese” or “orange peel” appearance that often develops on the thighs has remained somewhat elusive, even throughout years of intense study. We want to know why cellulite is such a problem! More importantly, we want to know what we can do to minimize or eliminate the problem. We want women can enjoy greater satisfaction and confidence in their appearance.

While we don’t have all the answers just yet, a fair amount has been learned about cellulite, moving us closer to more viable treatment options. Here’s what we know:

  • Cellulite does not start on the skin. Research has discovered that it is not the skin that is responsible for dimpling, but the bands of connective tissue, called septae, are the direct cause.
  • Septae run in a specific pattern, and this pattern differs between men and women. This is why we see cellulite much more frequently on women’s bodies than on men’s. The woven pattern of septae in men holds underlying fat tissue more securely than the vertical pattern in women.
  • Cellulite does not develop because a person has become overweight. More people are becoming aware of this fact, which has increased frustration due to the loss of hope that weight loss can help reduce cellulite. Sometimes, losing weight does make cellulite less noticeable. However, there are people for whom cellulite looks worse when they lose weight.
  • Like weight loss, liposuction is a poor choice of “treatment” for cellulite. Liposuction reduces the amount of fat in a given area, but it does not loosen the fibrous bands through which any amount of fat will push.

The Cellfina cellulite treatment may help!

Our San Antonio MedSpa patients can minimize or eliminate the appearance of cellulite with the Cellfina treatment. Having discovered the role that septae play in the appearance of cellulite, science has been able to come up with one idea that is achieving outstanding results: to untether the skin from these bands. Performed in the office with local anesthetic, or numbing medication, Cellfina severs the pull of bands, allowing the skin to lie beautifully smooth as a result.
