Every cosmetic surgery comes with its unique set of pros and cons. Part of your responsibility (and ours) is to know what these are. When you know what you can expect from the process of your elected procedure, you are better equipped to manage your recovery and your long-term results. Here, we want to shed light on a few of the details of abdominoplasty.

Abdominoplasty, aka the tummy tuck, is a somewhat extensive procedure. This is only the case because this particular surgery can involve a larger area, not because it is complicated. Dr. Ortegon has extensive training in all areas of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery and can explain the ins and outs of abdominoplasty to enable patients the best opportunity to recover quickly and comfortably from their procedure. Some of the details that are important to know include the following:

Scheduling

One of the most pressing questions that patients have is when to schedule their tummy tuck. The answer is not necessarily straightforward. Some suggestions to consider:

  • If your tummy tuck is more extensive (full versus mini), consider scheduling now for best summer body.
  • Weight is a primary culprit of weak abdominal muscles. Before undergoing this body-sculpting procedure, it is optimal if you are at a healthy body weight that you intend to maintain.
  • In addition to increased weight, pregnancy places direct pressure on the abdominal wall, which can lead to separation between the muscles around the midsection. Abdominoplasty is best reserved for after all planned pregnancies.

Scheduling and Recovery

Depending on the extent of physicality involved in your line of work, you may need to schedule your abdominoplasty at a time in which you can work less, or not at all. Only light activities can be performed for the first 6 weeks after this procedure. Nothing more than 5 lbs can be lifted, and that isn't very much. This is also an important note for moms because it will mean the need for extra help around the house for a few months, at least.
