A breast lift and a breast augmentation can be done safely in one procedure, according to a new study. The study was released in the January issue of the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The study was done by ASPS Member Surgeon Michael Bradley Calobrace, MD, and his colleagues between 2005 and 2009.
The researchers reviewed their experiences performing a breast lift and a breast augmentation as a single procedure. Just over 330 cases where the two procedures were performed together were studied by Calobrace and his colleagues.
The way in which the researchers determined the safety of a combined procedure was to assess the rates of complications and re-operations. In comparison to a control group of women who only underwent a breast lift surgery, the safety rating for the combination procedure was not significantly different than the single procedure.
There are three important advantages to undergoing the two surgeries at the same time:
“In our experience, patients overwhelmingly prefer not to undergo a staged procedure and rather have the augmentation and mastopexy [breast lift] concurrently,” wrote Dr. Calobrace and the other researchers.
Breast augmentation and breast lift surgeries are among the most commonly performed cosmetic breast procedures.
Whether or not you have these popular procedures done as a single surgery is something that should be discussed with your surgeon before the operation. Your surgeon will know whether or not a single operation or staged operations will be right for your situation.
